From Fishing Words
Lampreys (Family Petromyzontidae) are long, slender jawless fish with round sucking mouths full of rasping teeth. They prey upon other fish by attaching themselves to the outside of the fish and then chewing a hole into the body, through which they suck the blood of the host fish. This is almost always fatal to the fish thus attacked.
Erroneously called "Lamprey eels", these fish live mostly in coastal ocean waters and up into some fresh water rivers. In the 19th century, they found their way into the Great Lakes viz canals from the ocean and almost destroyed the lake trout fishery. Science has developed "lampricides" however, that now keep them under control by killing the young in their spawning streams.
Although they are considered good eating, and were once highly prized in European countries, they are not fished commercially and most people are repulsed by their appearance to the extent that they do not want to eat them.
