There are many species of fish around the world that are known collectively as bass. Most of them actually belong to other families, but are "basslike" in appearance and habits. This will provide a list of some of the more popular bass to be found in freshwater. You will need to look them up individually to find more detailed information on each of them.

1. Largemouth Bass: are large members of the sunfish family. They are found throughout their native USA and have been relocated to Hawaii, Japan, Africa and other parts of the world.

2. Smallmouth Bass: are also not true bass, but big sunfish. They do not grow as large as the large mouth, and prefer cooler waters.

3. Rock Bass: Another member of the sunfish family. Closer in size to large bluegill.

4. Spotted Bass: Also known in various parts of the country as Coosa Bass or Kentucky Bass. Another member of the sunfish family.

5. Striped Bass: Also known as stripers or linesides, this fish may be found in both fresh and salt water. It is a member of the family moronidae.

6. White Bass: A smaller cousin of the striped bass. It is also knows as whitie, sand bass or sandie. It easily hybridizes with the striped bass, producing wipers.

7. Wiper: This hybrid of the striped bass and white bass is also known as hybrid or sunshine bass.

8. Yellow Bass: This is the smallest member of the striper family.

9. Peacock Bass: There are several species of this highly prized battler from South America. These fish are also not true bass, but cichlids...also known as pavon.
