Eels (Anguilliformes) are an order of fish with several sub-orders and a variety of species. Representatives of the eel family can be found in both freshwater and saltwater around the world. Here is a list of some of the various species. You may follow the links for more specific information on each of them:

1. Freshwater eels (Anguillidae) are found in the rivers of several countries. They live in the sea and then return to freshwater to spawn.

2. Moray eels (Muraenidae) are large predatory marine eels with over 200 species worldwide.

3. Conger eels (Congridae) grow quite large and are important food fish.

4. Snake eels (Ophichthidae) are snakelike eels of warm oceans.

5. Lamprey eels (Petromyzontidae)is a misnomer for the Lamprey. This is an eel-like fish with a rasping sucker mouth which preys on other fish by attaching itself and rasping a hole into the host.

6. Electric eels (Electrophorus electricus) is not an eel, but an elongated freshwater fish that is capable of generating a powerful electric shock to stun its prey.

7. Wolf eels (Anarrhichthys ocellatus) are members of a family of "wolf fishes" and not true eels, even though they have long eel-like bodies.
