They also go by the name mulhaden, grey herring, golden shad, seth and skipjack. The landlocked form is called a sawbelly or mooneye.

The alewife (Alosa pseudoharengus) is a species of herring.

They are a member of the family Clupeidae.
[edit] Basic Description:
This fish has a silvery blue or blue-green metallic look to it.

They reach a foot or so in length in salt water but only about half that in freshwater. The average size is about 6 inches and weighing about 4 oz.
